“The Cask of Amontillado” is an interesting story, cause it’s just “that one time I murdered this dude.” Like, that’s it, that’s the story in its entirety. Usually, this would be the culmination of a revenge story or the background to a murder mystery or otherwise just one event in a longer story, but here, it is presented on its own. We are not told why Montressor wants Fortunato dead, nor do we see any of the consequences of this action. We just have the murder itself, divorced of all but the most immediate context.
